I was thinking this for a while.
since the worlds and towns where the different students came from, there must be some local myths they had heard or based in the ideologies they had grew up too. Like Ruffnutt, she is a Viking that had lived under the Nordic mythology.
Merida with the Scotland’s mythology too with the reaction she has a with Celty. Perhaps Ori, who lived inside a bigger forest, where his father is a big oak tree of light…which legends had told the immense powers it has.
About Legends, it must be the same but the most known and unknown matter like the cosmic horrors from Lovecraft, the dimensional yet unexplored territories from Stephen King, the wonder like lands of Lewis Carrol/American McGee, or the twisted lands of Junji Ito.
Like: “Through oceans and through cosmos, there is the legend of four brothers who were the most famous in their time wizards, however their legacy lies in hands of others still there but hidden from others.
The kind brother of them called Cornelius, it was an wizard of nature realm, he veiled for each creature and protected them from the humans who started to be a plague in the lands, trying to keep good terms with both realms without getting into conflict.
The wise brother of them called Solarium, it limits reached no bound, his domains where higher and deep -biggest oceans, highest mountains, worried about the world changes and how to deal with them with their own brothers. Always asking if there is a solution without making Antigua, their most recognized yet old god of magic, angry for the change of rules.
The ascendant brother Lao Tao Yao, the most calmest from the four. His domains were ascendancy and transcendence. He veiled for the ones who arrived at their culmination in life to give them their respective yet according to their actions peace or end. He might be cold but he was just.
and the fourth brother, Ommadön. He was known, sadly, as the one who created the concept of black magic. The wizard which commands the most devious, cunning and evil deeds to the world, a twisted mind over all his brothers who, by Antigua, needs to exist since evil is part of all.
Legends said, all four brothers had a discussion about the future of the humans and the magic realm. Knowing their times had arrived to and end while technology come more in the life of persons, sentient creatures and hybrids. While Cornelius, Solarium and Lao Tao were in common sense condition in allow the ones mentioned explore new possibilities, Ommadön rejected it. Saying if he is going to give something to the new generation is an evolution of his aspects. He will turn brother against brother, he will give them the knowledge to destroy their environments, their land, their homes for petty money, he will teach them about murdering and have no compassion…until the era of technology be observed as a great sin and return back to their magic life…
(Flight of Dragon lore)
Or about the horrors and the diverse things even technology cannot explain well, like the ones who arrived thousands over thousand years in the past. Through the cosmos and beyond. The ones called Old Gods. The Primordial Engines of the Stars or the Terrible Ones.
Beings that are clumsily called as: The First Magical Ones. Due the fact, the energies they carry hadn’t to be related to magic or technology already found or made. Beings who has no intentions to interact, and if they do they’ll end all without compassion, doubts or feelings. Just like the twisters destroy lands and houses, like the fire consumes forests or like earthquakes/tsunamis move the lands; they will do it by nature’s way. Their nature or the nature of the cosmos.
Perhaps fiction inside the mind of their authors (like in real life) or accurate testimonies of those who saw them and survived.
Or folkloric ones. Since they are in a new town, they must have their own monsters, fictional (or not) deities, historical heroes, villains and deviants who change by good or bad the terrain all are living. Like the storytelling grandmothers and elders tell to the young ones. To scare them or just to give them advices like stories. (Like the folklore-event that didn’t worked well of the Nightmare Lord)
