Hey guys. I’m currently watching Moana as I’m trying to write her bio, but I don’t know whether to blend canon or do something completely original or have Maui involved.
For those who know Moana, any ideas? ^^;

Do you plan on making Moana Hawaiian, or some other Polynesian place? I’m asking for a certain location and ethnicity so to help.
Like I’m making Korra Inuit (which are not Polynesian) because the Water Tribes are based on Inuit people (sans the swampy water tribes). Asami is Japanese American because the Fire Nation is based on Japanese people and culture and American because I want her to speak English in the Republic City that will be California.
Anyways maybe Moana’s parents are overprotective of her because she’s a water magic user. Maybe they are very rare because of some curse or something involving Maui and that her parents don’t want her to go near the water because they’re scared that she’ll be so consumed with trying her water powers that she’ll be taken by the sea

Yeah and maybe take some inspiration from film theory's video on Moana. here's the link youtu.be/Rg2EA0XEnRM, it has some pretty interesting stuff that could be helpful in writing her bio.

I’m actually interested in that curse idea and how Maui might be involved with it! There’s potential in there. Thank you!

Okay, so I was looking up both Hawaiian and Maori mythology to see if it would inspire me with the curse thing for Moana. In Hawaii, the god of the sea was called Kanaloa while in Maori, he was called Tangaroa.
Perhaps Maui tricked or stole from a powerful water magic user. I read somewhere that Kanaloa was also associated with the underworld? Maybe instead it could be a water mage who also practiced the dark arts? Also interesting, Kanaloa was also associated with a squid or octopus. Maybe a shapeshifter? Just throwing out some ideas.
