Name: Cereza Umbra
Nickames: Bayonetta (What most know her by)
Age: Unknown (appears to be late-twenties)
Species: Human
Power: Snake Transformation/Hair Manipulation
Occupation: Member of the High Magic Council/Matriarch of the Umbran Witches
Personality: An elegant and refined woman with high standards and tastes, Bayonetta is fully aware of her beauty and how she can use to it to manipulate others into doing what she wants, though she doesn't pull that kind of trick everyday, reserving it for days where she doesn't want to bother with a certain task or such. Regardless, this often happens at least once or twice a week.
Bayonetta's standard past times are drinking vintage alcohol, shopping for for new additions her-growing wardrobe and jewelry box, and hunting and besting powerful magical creatures in combat. Some compare her to more of a feline then a snake, in that she "plays with her food", fully enjoying bantering with others, regardless of the situation.
A dry wit and tendency for sarcastic commentary, Bayonetta plays by her own rules, regardless of her position on the council, and it's often shown best when she goes off on her own to handle assignments, not waiting for her fellow council members to reach a verdict when it's clear what has to be done. She prefers to go it alone, anyways, not wanting anyone to get in the way.
While usually calm and quite composed, Bayonetta is impatient when people take forever to get to the point, claiming she hates people who talk too much and is quick to make it clear what she'll do to them if they don't stop talking before her patience runs out. It's not a threat to be taken lightly, so she usually gets her way.
Nonetheless, Bayonetta can be playful around those she cares for and trusts, often indulging in some light-hearted teasing when she can, especially towards her charge, Loki.
As a teacher of future generations of Umbran Witches, she is a stern but understanding mentor who simply wishes for the best for her students, and will guard them with her life in order to prevent the tragedy that befall her clan when she was younger from repeating, even if it means she makes more enemies then allies.
While her usual personality doesn't often let it show, deep down, Bayonetta is a kind woman with a soft heart that can always be affected by her friends and family, but most especially, children. She often becomes quickly attached to any child that decides she isn't too scary, and acts with an almost motherly nature towards them.
Her charge, Loki, is not exempt from this behavior, even as she teases him, and Bayonetta can often be found subtly checking him over and making sure he's okay whenever she sees him, much to his embarrassment. While protective of all her friends and family, Loki is often the one receiving the brunt of this ever since Bayonetta took him into her care.
While fond of children and most students in the academy in her own distant way, Bayonetta is not exempt from feeling some annoyance towards them when they start chaos when she's in town. If any troublemakers are caught, they're in for a scolding for almost ruining her time-off.
Bayonetta hates when people ask her age, stating that a woman's age is not something someone should just casually ask. She also dislikes crying children and cockroaches, though she often says a "crying cockroach baby" would be truly terrible.
History: The Umbran Witches, a female-only magic-user clan that practiced the dark arts, and worked in the shadows for centuries to ensure the peace and balance of nature, alongside their counterpart, the Lumen Sages, a male-only clan that focused on the light and holy arts, serving in the light as priests of the divine god of chaos, the Overseer.
These two clans were to never break the sacred tenants that the clans followed religiously, being neither allies nor enemies...until the day the most forbidden act was committed. An Umbran Witch and Lumen Sage had fallen in love, and given birth to a daughter, bearing a child of light and dark. A child of chaos. Her name was Cereza.
For their crimes, the witch was imprisoned within the depths of the Umbran Witches' dungeons, while the Sage was banished far away, to never return for his wife and daughter. Furthermore, the birth of Cereza caused the uneasy peace between the two clans to shatter, and they went to war, which waged through the beginning years of Cereza's childhood before the Umbran Witches proved to be triumphant, erasing the Lumen Sages from the history books while the survivors fled into hiding, likely spreading their bloodline across generations to ensure their magical arts didn't die out.
However, this were all distant events happening for the young Cereza, who grew up as the outcast and black sleep among her clan, shunned by adults and children alike. The only ones who treated her warmly, were her mother, who she often snuck down to see, and the daughter of the clan's matriarch, Jeanne. Initially, the heiress was rather antagonistic towards Cereza, but eventually, she become more sympathetic after noticing how lonely she was and decided she could be allowed to play with, despite the disapproval of the adults.
As Cereza grew older, she was originally forbidden to practice magic by the matriarch, but Jeanne eventually convinced her mother to allow Cereza to join the lessons, stating it would be a waste to let her talent go to waste when she could be used to bring the clan to new heights. While most would think of it as Jeanne using her for her own selfish gain, Cereza knew her friends was only playing to the expectations of their fellow clan members to give her an opportunity to be truly apart of the clan, even if only in magic.
As she took part in lessons, late at night, Cereza would sneak down into the dungeons and spend time talking with her mother, who would often sing her a lullaby to send her off to sleep when her child grew too tired to stay awake longer. This pattern continued into her teenage years, as she and Jeanne grew up into teenagers and started to focus on their future goals.
However, one day, during the ascension of the clan's newest matriarch, who had proven herself worthy against Jeanne in combat, who had no desire to take the Umbran Witch Throne, they were attacked during a moment of celebration. Cereza doesn't remember much of what their attackers looked like, due to the shock and fear she felt at the time, but she is aware they were likely an amalgamation of several different malicious terrorist groups that the Umbran Witches had fought in the past and defeated, scattering them to the winds.
Perhaps it was revenge, perhaps karma, or just a simple mistake of letting them live...she would never really know what prompted the attack, and Cereza didn't care for their reasons. As far as she needed to know, they sought to cause horrible chaos and disarray, and that was unforgivable.
Despite their best efforts, though they were the winners, the Umbran Witches were almost entirely slain that night, only a handful left at the end of the struggle, and most succubmed to their wounds later on, leaving Cereza, Jeanne...and only a handful of apprentice witches. Young and unsure of what to do, the sisters-in-arms clung to each other desperately, and decided they needed to uphold their clans duties, even if they were now alone.
For the next several years, while serving as mentors for their younger sisters during their training, Cereza and Jeanne traveled the world and upheld the balance, defending the weak and defenseless from the evil uses of magic and hunting both beast and man that would endanger humanity and it's allies. They spared no mercy, for where was the mercy for their fallen sisters on the night of the attack? Even Cereza's own mother, weak and imprisoned, wasn't spared a gruesome death.
However, as time passed, Cereza, now going by the name of "Bayonetta", found herself growing tired. She loved her sisters, truly, but she was tired of the constant vigilance and moving around, wanting to settle down somewhere where she could the younger witches in safety and take her time to truly help them understand the lessons.
When she brought this up to Jeanne, her fellow mentor understood and suggested she take the students and find an area to settle down, to use an a training arena for until the younger witches were ready to go on their own ways, and perhaps later on, if Bayonetta wanted to stay rather then continue traveling...maybe she could help train any possibly future students Jeanne found on her travels.
The idea of reviving her clan, to bring together a family of Umbran Witches after so long...it filled Bayonetta with such hope she couldn't refuse the chance to try it.
This essentially opened up the path to Bayonetta's seat on the Magic Council, where upon learning just who exactly she was and what she was attempting to do, they offered her a position that she could use to ensure the protection and survival of her students. In the end, it wasn't a hard decision.
She took the position and the benefits that came from being a Magic Council Member, and have used them relentlessly to ensure the safety of all her students, past, present and future, along with building an training hall for them, where her students also dorm together and live communally. During the years between her decision and the current year, Jeanne eventually brought Loki to Bayonetta, and left him under her care, essentially insuring his place among the Umbran Witches as the son of their new Matriarch, as Bayonetta had been dubbed.
Bayonetta, when not at her training school, is based in Lunaville, and is often popping in to check up on her young charge, Loki, as well as any possible problems that might have risen since her last visit. It's always a surprise when she comes into town, and she tends to joke it's to keep everyone on their toes, especially the troublemakers.
Alongside her council work and training future generations of Umbran Witches, Bayonetta specializes in the research and detainment of dark magics, using her status and influence to further progress the studies into how dark magics work and how they can work their users, for both the betterment of their users and to prevent anyone with malicious intent from being able to use them as a scrape goat.
