Valerie hummed in tune with the song coming out of her headphones, hand holding onto her Iphone in her pocket, chewing on bubblegum as she walked through the mall. What could she say, POP/STARS by K/DA was a good song to listen to. Plus, the music video for it was super cool, too.
She didn't have anything specific she wanted to get at the mall, but she was walking around the city, so she figured some window-shopping wouldn't hurt. Besides, she just got her paycheck from Tama, so she did have some money to spend if she wanted to. She had time to kill anyways, what with those two other returning students fixing up the dorm for the new students. She'd probably just be lounging around and be in the way, so it was good to get out of the way.
Her tail swished behind contently as the anthro walked around the mall, carefully avoiding bumping into people as she walked and checked out store's front windows. Even if she had grown up in town, the stores always seemed to have something new. Maybe she'd pop in her sister's store and see if they had anything good.
Though, now that she thought about it, Vera was out of town for the time being, something about a store manage's get-together for all the chain-stores in the region. Which meant the house would be empty, and probably get dusty, since their Dad was still...missing. She'll go check on the house, later then and keep it clean for Vera.

Raphtalia had stars in her eyes as she looked over the mall. She was still getting used to the town and its many different sights. It was far different from the markets she saw both growing up and traveling. Both in it's designed and with how polite everyone seemed to be. Sure, she got some small glanced here and there. But it was far better from the reactions she used to get as a little kid. She shook her head, trying to snap out of her awes. Right now, she needed to get some stuff for the school year.
'But...where do I go to first for them?' Raphtalia thought.
Sure, she had been used to going to markets before for food, clothing, and work back when she and her siblings traveled. But it was a lot different here. There were so many different stores for items she didn't recognize. Like something called video-games, CDs, and movies. She made a note to ask someone about them back at the orphanage or at the school in her mind. She glanced at the list in her hand before she looked at the shops near her. Maybe she should just look inside them all to see what she could find?

Valerie continued to walk through the mall, peering into the shops as she walked by. Didn't seem like there was anything new, really. What a bummer. As she kept moving, she noticed a girl with what looked liked raccoon-ears glancing between a list and the stores around her, looking a bit confused. Seems she was confused about where to go for what she needed.
Thinking it over, Valerie decided it couldn't hurt to approach her and see if she needed help. The girl was likely a new student at the academy, and as a returning student, she was her senior, so it'd be good to set a good example, right? Plus, who knows, she might be fun to hang around.
Walking up to the girl, the anthro called out, "Hey, you lost? Need help looking for something?"

Raphtalia's raccoon ears perked up a bit when she heard the voice. She quickly looked to see a cat anthro walking over. Raphtalia smiled a bit sheepishly at the question. Was it that clear to tell?
"A bit...I'm trying to figure out the best place to get these items." Raphtalia explained.
She held the list out for Valerie to look over.
"I'm...not very used to this 'mall' yet." Raphtalia admitted. Hopefully, she got the name of the place correctly.

Valerie made an understanding hum as she took the list from the girl to look it over, hearing the admittance from her. Seems she wasn't too used public place like this much...or at all, judging by the emphasis she put on "mall". Reminded her of what little her father told her and Vera about his job, about how some anthros and half-anthros weren't treated kindly in places, and they often didn't learn of things that were normal knowledge for others unless they were lucky or later in life.
Coming to this conclusion, Valerie decided it wouldn't hurt to help the girl find what she's looking for. She had nothing better to do, anyways,
"If you don't mind, I can help you find these." Valerie offered.

"Really? Thank you so much! I can pay you back later somehow." Raphtalia said in joy.
Sure, the adults in the town were pretty helpful already and so were her siblings. But it still felt great whenever someone was willing to do so. Through the half-raccoon girl did mean it when she said she would pay Valerie back later. It only seemed right after all.

Valerie didn't really feel like the girl should be paying her back, but she could tell the half-raccoon meant repaying her, so the anthro figured she'd just find something later for the girl to repay, if she really felt like paying her back.
"It's no problem. I have a ton of free time today, anyways, so it's no trouble. I'm Valerie Oberlin, but you can call me Val if you want. Almost everyone does." Valerie introduced herself, handing back the list.

"OK, thank you again. And it's nice to meet you Val. My name is Raphtalia. Through you can tell me Raph if you want." Raphtalia introduced.
She took the list back. Sure, the raccoon-girl was used to her full name being said but she heard it was common for people to have nicknames around here. Plus...she could admit, her full name could be hard to say for some.

"Pleasure to meet you, Raph. Hope we get along." Valerie said. Raphtalia's name was a definite mouthful, and not something she planned to repeat unless absolutely necessary. Then again, that was the norm with some students, they often had nicknames to make it easier.
"Come on, let's start working on that list. What do you wanna get first?" Valerie asked.

"Thanks, I hope so too." Raphtalia smiled.
Valerie seemed pretty nice so far. Raphtalia paused at her question. She recalled a few adults mentioned she would need to take down notes at the school for many classes.
"I thought of getting some notebooks and pencils first." Raphtalia said. "And maybe some folders?"

Valerie hummed as she went through a mental layout of the mall from what she remembered, and if she remembered right, a store that had stationary and such was around the east side, maybe?
"Pretty sure I remember where a store that sells those is, so follow me." Valerie said, starting to walk towards the east side of the mall.

Raphtalia nodded before she followed the anthro. Along the way, Raphtalia glanced at a few different stores they passed. Some ideas for what they could talk about entered Raphtalia's mind.
"So Val, are you a new student for the academy too?" Raphtalia asked curiosity. Mainly to try to make small-talk.

Glancing over her shoulder at the now-confirmed fellow student, Valerie smiled a bit and shook her head. Some small-talk wouldn't be too bad for the time she helped Raphtalia shopped.
"Nah, I'm a returning student." Valerie replied, her tail waving around lazily as they walked.

"Really? So what is the school like?" Raphtalia asked.
She heard a lot of stories from adults. But it would be nice to hear stories from a follower student. Raphtalia's tail waved a little bit out of her interest.

The anthro cat could tell Raphtalia was curious about how the school was, and she couldn't blame her. She often asked students herself before being enrolled.
"Pretty great. A lot of understandable rules, pretty great teachers, and most of the time, cool students. I have some good friends that I meet through the school myself. Plus, the classes are cool." Valerie said.
